A Limited Edition Cardigan That Resells for $150
Plus size fashion doesn't usually resell, but this was an exception.
Key Points
- Cardigans would be sold through Hot Topic stores only, and initial releases made it clear that supplies were limited.
- A combination of the limited supply and intense popularity on social media coinciding with a series of Halloween-related Disney events led to the sweaters selling out.
- Retailed for $60 and resold for $150-$200. Standard sizes sell better than the plus size.
Maybe you already know this, but Disney fans tend to be pretty serious about their merchandise. In fact, it's entirely possible to make plenty of profit through reselling Disney gear alone. From pins to Funko Pops, backpacks and sofa covers, anything Disney gets people excited.
Additionally, limited time releases, especially ones available only through certain stores or locations, are ideal items to invest in. A great example is one of these Candy Corn Cardigans, part of a special collaboration between Disney and Hot Topic for the 2021 Halloween season.
What is the Candy Corn Cardigan?
Despite years of candy corn slander, it appears the iconic candy is still capable of lending its design to fashion. In 2021, designer Her Universe would unveil their new design for a Disney-meets-Halloween cardigan, featuring Mickey and Minnie.
Her Universe is an established brand specializing in fandom relevant clothing for women. Notable collaborations include Marvel, Studio Ghibli, Star Wars, and of course, Disney. They also place an emphasis on plus-size fashion, and most of their designs are available in a wide range of sizes.
The 2021 Halloween Cardigan would sport bright orange and white stripes as part of its candy corn design. The sleeves featured Mickey and Minnie on each arm, and a small black bat was embroidered on the breast. Not too warm, not too cold, it made for perfect fall attire, and would prove immediately popular.
How to buy a Candy Corn Cardigan
The cardigan would be made available only through Her Universe's website, and in-store at Hot Topic shops. The initial announcement made it quite clear as well that these would be a limited time offering, noting that they would be available while supplies last.
Why did the Candy Corn Cardigans resell?
A key part of their popularity may have been the upcoming "After Hours Boo Bash" that would be held at certain Disney parks through the fall. During a "Boo Bash", Disney parks would stay open after their usual closing times, and take on a Halloween theme. Guests would need to purchase a special ticket to be admitted and were encouraged to wear a costume or other Halloween related attire.
The event would end up running from August 2021 all the way up to Halloween night, with prices starting at $130 and rising to $200 per ticket by Halloween. The Boo Bashes were an enormous success, with tickets selling out at most parks, so purchasing an outfit to match the evening may have been on many ticketholders' minds.
Following their release, online supplies were the first to deplete. Standard sizes sold out very quickly, followed by the plus sizes. In-store supply would remain a bit longer, and would be the ideal opportunity for a reseller willing to make a trip to the mall. Retailing for $60, cardigans would resell for up to $200 through Halloween. Since then, prices have settled around the $150, with plus sizes going for a little less.
Items like these are a great way to make money through reselling. Light and easy to ship, the limited time supply also guarantees long term value. Even if these don't prove very popular, they still will hold value to collectors or speculators who are looking for underappreciated items.
