This Bottle of Whiskey Sells for Nearly 1 Million Dollars
Just 200 bottles of the Yamazaki 55 Year were produced.
Key Points
- 200 bottles of Yamazaki 55-Year Single Malt Whiskey were released in 2019 for a retail cost of $60,000
- Bottles were sold via lottery, with 100 allocated to Japan, and 100 to the rest of the world
- In 2021 a sealed bottle sold at auction via Sotheby's for $950,000
Suntory's 55 Year Whiskey has become notorious in alcohol collectors' circles for its high price. Produced half a century ago, the whiskey is only available in extremely limited numbers and locations, with half the stock allocated exclusively to Japan. Bottles were sold to distributors through a lottery system, who proceeded to mark them up heavily before making them available to their most valued clients. Because of this, the Yamazaki 55-Year is one of the rarest, and most expensive whiskeys available today.
What is the Yamazaki 55 Year Whiskey?
Whiskey (or whisky, depending on who you ask) has seen a surge in interest as part of the craft beverage renaissance. People are so passionate about it that some are willing to pay big bucks for a bottle.
For example, did you know that there is a whiskey out there that is selling for nearly a million dollars? That's right! Distilled by Suntory, the Yamazaki 55 Year Single Malt Whiskey is a blend of single malts distilled as early as 1960, and was limited to just 200 bottles.
While Suntory is known for producing numerous expensive and exclusive spirits, this bottle aims to be the centerpiece of any collection.
Why does the 55 Year Whiskey resell?
Individual bottles were allocated to high-end shops, typically found in airports or malls, and retailed for around $60,000 USD, while Japanese buyers could get it at the comparatively cheap price of $27,000.
This Whiskey pays tribute to Japan's founding family, and it is a collector's item. If it's too good to pass up, keep an eye out for the next one to go up for auction. While it's sold for nearly $800,000 in the past, more recent sales have been in the modest $500,000-700,000 range. Hopefully the new owners will have a glass to celebrate their newest addition to the collection.
