Limited release, limited time, limited locations. This one is a little rare.

Key Points

  • Limited edition set was only available in stores in Asia, and only 10,000 were sold.
  • Originally retailed for $75 in 2013 and now valued at more than $1,000.
  • Lego Architecture series is popular among collectors and resellers because retired sets are not reproduced.

Released in only very limited stores, LEGO set 21021 "Marina Sands" has become a holy grail for collectors. Even when it was sold in stores it was hard to find, and after its discontinuation, prices have risen to unbelievable numbers. While a Singaporean hotel might not be what comes to mind when you think expensive LEGO sets, Marina Sands will certainly go down as one of the hardest to find.

Why the Marina Sands LEGO set costs $1,000

If you're familiar with the LEGO aftermarket, you'll know that many of the Architecture series sets are good investments. These sets are available for a limited time only, and when production has ceased, they will not be available at retail again. One of the most valuable of the Architecture series is 2013's Marina Bay Sands 21021.

Released only through retail stores in Asia, and limited to just 10,000 sets in total, this set has continued to appreciate in value since 2013, reaching a resale price of $1,000 or more.

Good luck finding one of these

Obviously, sealed sets in the original factory box are the most desirable, and many collectors may prefer to keep the box unopened and unbuilt. Still, opened and used sets can get around $150-$500, which goes to show the extreme demand for this set.

On a related note, check out LEGO's recent entry in the Architecture series, Singapore 21057. The new set also features the Marina Bay Sands resort, but its wider distribution means it won't the same remarkable aftermarket as 21021. Still, its an interesting choice by LEGO, and may indicate they are aware of the intense popularity of the original Marina Bay Sands set.

What do you think? Have you sold LEGO sets before? Or would you prefer to build them instead?
